Moved Permanently – The file or page has been moved permanently to a new location.

As opposed to a 302 redirect, a 301 redirect indicates a permanent move and tells the search engines to pass the authority of the previous page to the new location. It may take a while for a 301 redirect to be picked up which depends on the crawl frequency of your site, however it is said that a 301 redirect carries 90% of the link juice over, good or bad. As such, this is the preferred method for redirecting an old site to a new address.
