locomotive train

Hurry, there’s a train coming!

OK, Lets forget about Local SEO and Digital Marketing for a moment and consider something entirely different.

Because it can get slightly tedious all this talk about search engines.

To be brutally honest,  even I sometimes get sick of it.

So lets discuss a different kind of engine…. A steam engine…A big huffing chuffing locomotive full of passengers all with big fat pockets filled with big fat wallets full of money.

And on the front of the train is a big fat flashing neon sign that reads “SPENDING TRIP TO MONEY TOWN

Its hurtling down the tracks at 100mph.

And everyone can hear it and feel the rumbling of its wheels as it speeds towards its destination.

All those people and all that money and they are definitely going to spend it.

But how do you get some of it?

Most local businesses  are content having their shops  at the side of the tracks where the train used to stop hoping the train might stop there again  or possibly someone may see their  business and jump off the train to buy something.(Think organic search result listings)

Other local business that don’t want to move location are busy erecting advertising signs along the side of the tracks and hope that some of the passengers may see the sign and visit them.(Think paid ads at top of page)

Which brings us to the Google Smart businesses.

Where do you think they might be?

That’s right !

The Local Pack

Picture of Local Pack Electrician, Bournemouth

And there is only space for a handful of businesses.

And They will get over half of the money on that train!

But there is more than just one train

In fact……………

A new train arrives every single day!

Build it and they will come(In fact they are already arriving)

Google Smart local businesses are doing a few things differently to Google stupid businesses.

They are taking advantage of the opportunities offered by Local SEO and the “Local Pack”

And with good reasons for doing so, including:

  • 97% of consumers use internet when researching local products/services (BIA/Kelsey)
  • 98% of searchers choose a business that is on page 1 of the results they get.

Yes, Google Smart businesses are also performing well at  other important business activities including customer service, building relationships etc but they have realized that the Google Local Pack has fundamentally changed the nature of online marketing and they are adapting to take advantage of the changes.

And here is a piece of advice that may lose us some potential Local SEO clients:

There are many advanced strategies for outranking your competitors in the Local Pack.

But the truth is….if you act now, most local businesses do not need to use them.

If you get the basics right you will already be in the top 1%.

Because most businesses are still asleep.

Check out our Local SEO Guide to see how you can get started.

Google has decided to change the rules that dictate how people can find local businesses on the internet.

It has already happened.

It is the most important development in local search since the internet began.

Most local businesses are unaware of the changes and of the opportunities  created.

Local businesses that act now can reap the huge benefits of being ranked highly in the Google Local Pack.

Getting found online isn’t about luck Or any other random factor

Its about doing the right things so google knows that you exist

So when somebody searches for your local service or product

They find you.

  1. Interesting piece, thanks for sharing.

I think it’s fair to say, though, that whether you run a hipster café or an industrial plumbing shop, your small business needs an online presence. I have been talking to people about how the world of marketing has changed over the last 5- 10 years and how they need to be found online.
